High blood pressure \(called hypertension\) is one of the biggest health problems in Ghana today. It affects millions of Ghanaians — and the dangerous part is that most people feel completely fine and have no idea their blood pressure is high. It is called the “silent killer” for this reason.

This guide explains what high blood pressure is, the warning signs \(when they do appear\), what causes it, and what you can do about it.

## What is blood pressure?

Blood pressure is the force your blood puts on the walls of your blood vessels as your heart pumps. It is measured as two numbers — for example, 120/80. The top number \(systolic\) is the pressure when your heart beats. The bottom number \(diastolic\) is the pressure when your heart rests between beats.

Blood Pressure Reading| What It Means
---|---
Below 120/80| Normal — keep it up
120–139 / 80–89| Prehypertension — take action now
140/90 or above| High blood pressure — see a doctor
180/120 or above| Hypertensive crisis — seek emergency care immediately

## Why high blood pressure is dangerous

When blood pressure stays high for a long time, it silently damages blood vessels, the heart, kidneys, and brain. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure is the leading cause of:

  * Stroke — a medical emergency where blood supply to the brain is cut off
  * Heart attack
  * Heart failure
  * Kidney failure
  * Vision loss

## Warning signs — when symptoms do appear

Most of the time, high blood pressure has no symptoms. But in some people — especially when blood pressure is very high — these signs may appear:

  * Severe headache at the back of the head
  * Blurred or double vision
  * Nosebleeds
  * Chest pain or tightness
  * Shortness of breath
  * Dizziness or feeling faint
  * Swollen feet or ankles

Warning

If you experience a sudden severe headache, confusion, chest pain, or difficulty speaking or moving one side of your body — call for help immediately. These could be signs of a stroke or hypertensive crisis.

## Know the FAST signs of stroke

Stroke is a medical emergency that requires treatment within minutes. Use the FAST method to recognise it:

  * F — Face: Is one side of the face drooping? Ask the person to smile.
  * A — Arms: Can they raise both arms? Does one drift downward?
  * S — Speech: Is speech slurred or strange? Can they repeat a simple sentence?
  * T — Time: If you see any of these signs, get to a hospital immediately. Every minute counts.

## What causes high blood pressure in Ghana?

  * Eating too much salt — heavily salted foods and seasoning cubes are a major factor
  * Being overweight
  * Not exercising enough
  * Drinking too much alcohol
  * Smoking
  * Stress and emotional strain
  * Family history of high blood pressure
  * Diabetes
  * Older age — risk increases after 40

## How to prevent and manage high blood pressure

  * Reduce salt in your food — use fewer seasoning cubes \(Maggi, Royco\) and add less table salt
  * Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  * Exercise at least 30 minutes most days — even walking counts
  * Reduce or stop alcohol
  * Quit smoking
  * Manage stress — rest, prayer, and social support all help
  * Maintain a healthy weight
  * Take medication if your doctor prescribes it — do not stop taking it when you feel better

## Check your blood pressure regularly

The only way to know your blood pressure is to check it. Blood pressure checks are available at virtually every clinic and pharmacy in Ghana, and are often free or very cheap. If you are over 30, aim to check at least once a year. If you have a family history of hypertension, check every 6 months.
