# Early Signs of Diabetes Every Ghanaian Should Know

Diabetes is rising rapidly in Ghana and many people have it without knowing. This guide explains the early warning signs, why it is increasing, and practical steps to prevent or manage it.

Diabetes is becoming one of the biggest health challenges in Ghana. It is estimated that over 500,000 Ghanaians have diabetes — and many of them do not know it yet. Type 2 diabetes in particular develops silently over years, and by the time many people get diagnosed, damage has already been done.

This guide explains the early signs of diabetes, why it is rising in Ghana, and the simple lifestyle steps that can prevent or manage it.

## What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where your blood has too much sugar \(glucose\) because your body either does not make enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone that moves sugar from your blood into your cells for energy.

There are two main types: Type 1 \(usually starts in childhood, the body makes no insulin\) and Type 2 \(most common in adults, the body does not use insulin well\). There is also gestational diabetes — diabetes that develops during pregnancy.

## Early warning signs of diabetes

These symptoms develop slowly and are often dismissed as being tired or just getting older. Do not ignore them:

  * Excessive thirst — constantly wanting to drink water
  * Frequent urination — especially waking up at night to use the toilet
  * Extreme tiredness and weakness that does not improve with rest
  * Blurry vision
  * Slow-healing cuts or wounds \(especially on the feet\)
  * Tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet
  * Unexplained weight loss \(especially in Type 1\)
  * Recurring skin, urinary, or vaginal infections
  * Feeling hungry even after eating a full meal
  * Darkening of skin in folds of the neck, armpits, or groin \(a sign of insulin resistance\)

The most important signs

The classic three symptoms to remember are: excessive thirst, frequent urination, and extreme tiredness. If you have all three together, see a doctor and ask for a fasting blood sugar test.

## Why is diabetes increasing in Ghana?

  * Changing diets — more white rice, refined flour, sugary drinks, and processed foods
  * Less physical activity, especially in cities
  * Increasing obesity rates
  * Stress
  * Family history — diabetes runs in families

## Foods that raise blood sugar quickly in Ghana

These are common Ghanaian foods that can raise blood sugar quickly, especially in large portions. You do not have to stop eating them, but be mindful of how much you eat and how often:

  * White rice and banku in large quantities
  * Kenkey with lots of sugar or sweetened drinks alongside it
  * Sugary drinks — Coca Cola, Fanta, Malta, Malt, sweetened tea
  * White bread and pastries
  * Fried yam with sweetened sauces
  * Packaged biscuits and snacks

## How to reduce your diabetes risk

  * Eat more vegetables, beans, and whole grains at every meal
  * Drink water instead of sugary drinks
  * Reduce portion sizes of starchy foods \(rice, banku, fufu\)
  * Exercise at least 30 minutes most days — brisk walking is excellent
  * Maintain a healthy weight
  * Get a blood sugar test at least once a year if you are over 40 or have a family history of diabetes

## Managing diabetes if you already have it

Diabetes can be managed very effectively with the right diet, exercise, and medication. People with well-managed diabetes live long, healthy lives. The key is consistency — do not stop medication when you feel better, and attend all your doctor appointments.
