BIMA GHANA AND TIGO SHORTLISTED FOR GSMA’S BEST MOBILE INNOVATION FOR EMERGING MARKETS AWARD.

ACCRA, 19 FEBRUARY 2018: BIMA and Tigo have been shortlisted for the Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets award in the Social Good category at this year’s GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards. The prestigious awards are a recognition and celebration of contributions made to the evolving mobile industry across the world.
Specifically, the Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets award recognises genuine innovation in mobile initiatives that are having a tangible effect on the inclusion, accessibility and vitality of emerging markets. The nomination acknowledges BIMA and Tigo’s social impact by providing low-income consumers with access to previously unattainable insurance and mobile health services.
BIMA has pioneered the first digitalised mobile insurance model by integrating its proprietary mobile insurance platform with the technology infrastructure of mobile operators, enabling customers to register and pay for insurance premiums entirely via their mobiles.
In Africa, BIMA partners with Tigo in Ghana, Senegal and Tanzania to bring low-cost insurance products to 8.8 million customers. In Ghana, BIMA's first market, one in ten life insurance policies is already provided by Tigo Insurance, BIMA’s partner program with Tigo (now AirtelTigo) which has so far paid out more than 25,000 claims worth $2.4 million. Since its market entry in Ghana in 2010, BIMA has been a key player in helping increase the country's insurance penetration from 8% in 2010 to 29% in 2015.
Damien Gueroult, Country Manager, BIMA, commented: “Since launching in Ghana in 2010, our strategic partnership with Tigo (now AirtelTigo) has been a vital part of BIMA’s rapid growth story. Our collaboration has enabled us to provide the underserved with vital insurance and mobile health services which they haven’t had access to previously. We’re delighted that our contribution to driving financial inclusion has been recognised by GSMA and we will continue to leverage mobile technology to develop innovative insurance products and services that give people the financial protection they need.”
Winners of the awards will be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, running from 26th February to 1st March.
